“Communicate unto the other person that which you would want him to communicate unto you if your positions were reversed.” — Aaron Goldman, author and founder of the marketing firm Connectual

The Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you’d have them do unto you”, also applies to communication in marketing. You should communicate with clients openly, honestly, and with the same transparency and integrity that you’d want if you were the client.

According to a 2022 study conducted by Statistica, 60% of consumers place transparency and trustworthiness as the most important traits of a brand. This is an increase of 5% from the prior year, meaning that more and more consumers are only patronizing brands they trust and see as honest.

Open communication also helps you learn more about your client to provide better content and overall higher-quality work. When you are open and transparent with your client, they will return the favor by being open and transparent with you. You’ll be able to gain a deeper sense of your client’s needs, goals, and purpose to help them succeed.

How to Facilitate Open Communication

There are many ways to ensure open communication with your clients. If you aren’t sure where to start, you can start by being honest, transparent, and open-minded.

  • Be honest

Have honest conversations with your clients by letting them know what is working and what isn’t. If they come to you with an idea that isn’t feasible or beneficial for them, inform them of that fact and help them find solutions that would work better. A client will respect and appreciate honesty infinitely more than inadvertent failure.

  • Be transparent

Let your clients know what steps you are taking to support them. Keep them involved and informed on the process, and be sure to answer any questions they have along the way. Reassure them that they have full access to you and can come to you with any questions or concerns they have regarding your relationship and business affairs.

  • Be open-minded

Be willing to hear your client out and open to accepting new ideas and perspectives that may differ from your own. Look at what others are doing in the same space, both good and bad. You must be flexible and adaptable to the environment and the needs of your client. Open communication plays a huge part in your ability to be open-minded.
